BusinessNZ welcomes NCEA focus on literacy and numeracy

Strengthening literacy and numeracy and the introduction of a vocational education award are welcomed by BusinessNZ, says Chief Executive Kirk Hope.

"It is vital that we ensure young people are leaving school with a good foundation to undertake further training and study. With approximately 40 per cent of our work force having lower levels of literacy and numeracy skills than needed, it is critical to make sure literacy and numeracy are cornerstones of the NCEA qualification so our young people can be lifelong learners.

"There is massive demand in the trades, and we welcome better links between schools and industry to provide a pathway into apprenticeships. There is great potential for the vocational education award to better link work experience and vocational skill development through NCEA.

"With the Reform of Vocational Education underway, there is a great opportunity to look at how education providers across schools and the tertiary sector work with businesses to provide authentic and engaging training experiences and connect learners with relevant skills to the many job opportunities available."
