Public invited to living roofs seminar on Monday 21 November

If you have ever discovered grass in your spouting and wondered if it might be quicker just to grass the whole roof, Dusty Gedge might be the person you need to talk with.

Dusty Gedge, an international speaker who has been promoting living roofs for over 15 years and is the current President of the European Federation of Green Roof Associations, will be in Whangarei delivering a presentation at the Capitaine Bouganville Theatre.

Northland's Planning Network (which is a network of local government and private planning practitioners in Northland) has invited him to talk about the benefits of living roofs, and outline his experiences working in policy and planning, design, research and installation, making living roofs a living reality.

He will present overseas examples, explain why living roofs are a critical element to environmentally sustainable design, and describe the wide ranging benefits that should be considered in the living roof design stage. These include biodiversity, reduced building energy requirements, stormwater management, increased rentable area and helping mitigate the effects of climate change.

He will also be describing the Hundertwasser-linked work he has done with the Austrian government.

This presentation will provide developers, property managers, home owners, landscape architects, architects, urban designers, planners, and landscape designers with the opportunity to gather information and ideas, answer queries, and network with professionals experienced in living roofs in New Zealand.

WDC Resource Consents Manager Alister Hartstone said people often wanted to use innovative new designs in their buildings and the trend for ecological factors to be considered was growing.

"People are becoming more interested in how they can integrate their buildings into the environment, and Dusty will be able to provide really good information on the living roofs concept and the benefits it provides.

"With people of Dusty's background and calibre of expertise presenting, people involved in the building and land development industry in Northland can be right at the leading edge of news about what is happening across the world in developing sustainable building design.
