Crossways Community Crèche has a new home

MEDIA RELEASE
16 March 2012

Crossways Community Crèche has a new home

Crossways Community Crèche has secured a new home in Mt Victoria after five years of looking.

The crèche went unconditional on a house at 61 Majoribanks Street after a lot of hard work by the creche’s parent committee at the start of this week.

Creche Licensee Committee Cooddinator Yadana Saw said the committee managed to raise $120,000 to put towards the deposit of the home. This included a generous interest free loan from a family with ties to the early childhood education centre.

“We have been extremely fortunate that we have been generously offered an interest free loan to cover the remaining gap in funding for the deposit on the house,” Ms Saw says.

“The loan, together with savings and donations has enabled us to purchase the house,” she says.

“We still have a lot of hard work ahead of us in terms of fundraising to repay the loan, but our future is secured and now we expect the crèche to go from strength to strength.”

The crèche has been searching for a new property since its former base in Crossways House on Brougham Street was sold by the Presbyterian Church in 2007.

Since then the crèche has been operating out of temporary premises in Coromandel Street in Newtown.

Crossways Crèche will be a huge asset for Mt Victoria and the CBD and it is hoping local businesses will now get behind its fundraising efforts through sponsorship.

Yadana Saw says that in the past five weeks there have been many messages of support for the crèche from within the community and a growing number of donations from people who want the crèche to return to the suburb.

Crossways Crèche is known for its unique approach to childcare. It is a not-for-profit, teacher-led, parent-run crèche that has been providing high quality early childhood education for Mt Victoria and surrounding suburbs for more than 30 years. It has low child to teacher ratios and has received excellent ERO reports.
