A Night on the Island - Enviroschools Otago Event

A Night on the Island - Enviroschools Otago Secondary Students Event

Dunedin, 27 March 2012 – The media is invited to meet with and talk to Enviroschools students, either before they depart for a night on Quarantine Island, or on their return.

Twenty two senior secondary students from Dunedin enviroschools will head to Quarantine Island on Friday 30 March, at 2.30pm, on the Vivienne J, for A Night on the Island.

The excursion is 24 hours of inspiration, planning and implementing action for their schools and community, figuring out what stepping up to leadership means, and what it means to be an enviroschool. The students will also participate in environmental action on the island before returning at 4pm on Saturday, 31 March.

As much as possible, the time will be led by the students themselves with the assistance of two young facilitators, Janet Young and Rosina Scott-Fyfe, both of whom have been involved with Enviroschools for some years.

Otago Regional Co-ordinator of Enviroschools, Jenny Neilson, says such events deepen participants’ understanding of global issues and the solutions that individuals and groups can take at a local level.

“All students attending are already actively involved in community and ecological action, and a hui such as this allows them to meet like-minded students from other enviroschools, deepen their understandings and practices, and have a lot of fun while doing so.”

“The DCC is a generous funder of the Enviroschools Programme and, as well as hui such as this for students, workshops for teachers at the 58 Otago enviroschools are also held and well attended,” she says.

More information about Enviroschools is available at www.enviroschools.org.nz.
