Moore meets NZ NASA and YouTube Space Lab Winners

Ambassador Moore meets with NASA and YouTube Space Lab Regional Winners from New Zealand

On Friday, 23 March, Ambassador Mike Moore met with NASA and YouTube’s Space Lab regional winners from New Zealand, Patrick Zeng, 17, and Derek Chan, 16. The two students, escorted by their parents, travelled from Auckland and were one of six teams to visit Washington, DC for an awards ceremony.

In October, YouTube and Lenovo, in cooperation with Space Adventures, NASA, ESA, and JAXA announced YouTube Space Lab, a worldwide initiative challenging 14-18 year-old students to design a science experiment that can be performed in space. YouTube received 2,000 submissions and from those six regional winning teams hailing from Egypt, India, New Zealand, Spain and the U.S. competed to be chosen as the global winners.

While in Washington, the six teams visited Washington, DC for a series of activities to honour their achievements, including a ZERO-G Flight, a special tour and dinner at the Udvar-Hazy Air & Space Museum in Dulles, and an awards ceremony at the Newseum on 22 March. The two winning teams, from the U.S. and Egypt, will have their experiments performed 250 miles above Earth aboard the International Space Station (ISS) and live streamed on YouTube later this year.
