More Elm Trees To Come Out

Another 17 elm trees in South Hagley Park, beside Moorhouse Avenue, are to be removed because they are in decline.

The trees are about 130 years old and will be removed in about a month's time. This time last year another 17 elms were cut down and 65 new trees planted in their place.

They are now doing great, says Dieter Steinegg, the Christchurch City Council's tree surgeon. Under the "on-going rejuvenation process" about 30 different trees will be planted in the space created this year.

As was done last year, the felled elm timber will be put out to tender. Last year's elms went to a local sawmill operator.
