Environmental Expo in Russell

Gathering of ecological ideas and minds

Best methods of protecting the environment in the Far North will be on show at the Russell Town Hall and Village Green on Saturday, 5 May.

Ideas will be shared on alternative energy, biodynamics, bio-security, building materials, coastal management, environmental groups, flood control, use of herbs in the home, native flora and fauna protection, organic food, permaculture, pest control, wastewater management and water quality – including a guest appearance by a real, live kiwi.

Workshops on such topics as building with natural materials and the many uses of herbs will take place throughout the day, starting at 10am when the Mayor of the Far North, Yvonne Sharp will launch the day’s proceedings.

Keynote speakers on the day will be Pete and Judy Morrin from Hawkes Bay. Pete and Judy became household names in January when their TV1 documentary introduced us to a family of kiwi – Jock, Maggie and little Muff living on the shores of Lake Waikaremoana and demonstrating the vulnerability of our national icon. The Morrins are wildlife photographers now much in demand as speakers on cruise ships plying the Pacific over the summer.

Lucky door prizes will be drawn throughout the day, and for the children there will be a colouring and recycling contest.

In the afternoon a Kiwi Listening Workshop will be hosted by Aroha Island Kiwi Sanctuary, to include fieldwork in the evening.

For those with a strong environmental message there are a few stalls available and would-be exhibitors are urged to contact Enterprise Russell on 09 403 8843 urgently.
