New Chairman For NZMA GP Council

Rotorua GP Dr Tricia Briscoe has been elected to chair the NZMA's General Practitioner Council. Dr Briscoe is also the Deputy Chairman of the NZMA.

Dr Briscoe is a former Chair of the Rotorua General Practice Group, a regional Independent Practitioner Association. Most recently, she chaired the Test Panel for General Practice Compliance Costs, which released its report earlier this year. This project aims to reduce GPs' day-to-day administrative burden. She has been a member of the NZMA Board for the past three years.

The GP Council was established in 1998 to consider major policy issues affecting general practice, and represent the interests of GPs on medico-political issues. It contributes substantially to the NZMA's advocacy activities. The GP Council also has a hands-on role with many government agencies, which seek practical input into aspects of their contact with GPs.

The GP Council is comprised of elected members from almost every sphere of general practice, and currently has representatives from the Royal New Zealand College of GPs and the Rural GP Network.
