Majority Of West Auckland Residents Support Painted Apple Moth Eradication

Some 86 percent of residents in the painted apple infested region believe that it is important eradication of the pest is pursued.

This is according to a survey commissioned by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry to gain feedback from residents located predominantly in the western suburbs of Auckland, regarding issues relating to painted apple moth and attitudes towards spraying.

Over 60 percent of the total sample knew about painted apple moth and 70 percent agreed or strongly agreed with aerial spraying being needed in very selected areas. A further 19 percent indicated they were neutral on this issue while the remaining 11 percent either disagreed or strongly disagreed.

Mail drops were the preferred method of delivery of information regarding the eradication programme by 60 percent of the sample. Newspaper, television and radio each received approximately half this level of support. Only 15 percent favoured public meetings.

In the survey a total of 600 telephone interviews were conducted from 21 August – 9 September 2001. One hundred interviews were conducted in Glendene, Glen Eden, Kelston, Avondale, Titirangi and Mt Wellington.
