Volunteers celebrated

Volunteers celebrated

New Zealanders will have the opportunity to celebrate the thousands of volunteers who work in local communities during National Volunteer Awareness Week, which runs from March 9 to 15.

It is estimated that there are 60-80,000 voluntary and not-for-profit organisations in New Zealand and over 1,000,000 volunteers. These range from members of school boards of trustees and fire fighters through to drivers and literacy teachers.

“Without volunteers many organisations would simply grind to a halt,” National Development Manager for Volunteering New Zealand, Karen Roberts, said today.

“It’s great to be able to remind New Zealanders that this huge pool of people exists, and to give volunteers a big pat on the back.”

During the week local volunteers groups will be celebrating their volunteers through awards ceremonies, morning teas and displays.
