Royal Australasian College of Surgeons believes patient harm is inevitable

A series of strikes by key health workers this year has put patients at risk and that risk is showing no sign of abating, says Chair of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS), Cathy Ferguson.

Speaking at the December 1 meeting of the RACS NZ National Board, Dr Ferguson called on all employers, employees and stakeholders to find other ways to settle their differences.

“No strike is in the interests of our patients and we seriously urge all parties to find other ways to settle their disputes,” Cathy Fergusson said.

“Strikes by radiographers, junior doctors and laboratory workers have placed patients at risk.

“The current strike adds particular stress to patients as well as hospital services by occurring so close to Christmas, a time when hospitals normally reduce access to health services.”
