Doctors write life-saving book

Doctors write life-saving book

If there is a singular thing that nearly 80 years of combined medicine has taught husband and wife doctor team Monica and Gerry Lewis is that when it comes to cancer, the right kind of knowledge can save lives.

Cancer is not some nebulous subject to this committed pair, but rather a harsh reality they’ve seen daily for decades as they have worked in hospitals, clinics and general practice rooms across New Zealand.

Most devastating to the couple is that so many people wait until traditional medicine has failed them before they begin to look at the broader solutions that might help.

To help curtail this often unnecessary suffering, the Auckland medical couple have self published a book/CD on cancer that has become a runaway success. Called Cancer: A Chance to Take Control of Your Future, it quickly sold out its initial 5000 print run (a best seller in NZ publishing terms) and has now been reprinted, with most sales coming via word-of-mouth.

Like Monica and Gerry, the book is succinct, comprehensive and dynamic. It details the profound tools that can help people with cancer – treatments that can be used alongside traditional surgery, chemotherapy and radiation to both improve the quality of these regular treatments and offer a better chance of a long and healthy life.

What makes the book unique is Monica and Gerry haven’t got any particular barrow to push – they are well versed in both orthodox medicine and alternative regimes and examine each in depth for the help they can - or cannot - give to patients.

Says Monica: “We both perceived the confusion and despair in our patients diagnosed with cancer as they searched for answers and straws to clutch at. We wanted to put one book together which looked at all on offer dispassionately and give patients an honest unbiased and scientific opinion of what is most likely to help.”

Ask the pair what are some of the first steps in fighting a cancer diagnosis they’d enrol and they mention removing environmental toxins, juicing, whole foods and use of supplements including selenium, Omega 3 fish oils and high dose IV Vitamin C.

Fascinating information includes how to make the body an inhospitable host for cancer, new cancer treatments, cancer markers and predictive testing.

The calibre of Monica and Gerry’s work is well recognised on the international scene - they travel several times a year to lecture in the US, England and Australia.

The couple met as medical students and both graduated from Otago Medical School in 1968. While Monica went on to specialise in general practice and nutritional medicine, Gerry completed his Doctorate in Medicine and became one of this country’s leading cardiologists. He has held executive positions with the New Zealand National Heart Foundation and been mentioned in Who’s Who in Medicine.

Over the last decade Monica and Gerry have turned their greatest attention to helping people overcome cancer. Says Gerry: “The question we most often hear is `Doctor – what would you do if you or one of your relatives had this condition’. In our book we detail our best answers.”

The couple say each person and every cancer is unique and a one-size-fits-all is not the right approach. However general recommendations to all cancer patients include:

 Remove all toxins and poisons which interfere with optimal body functioning by way of a clean diet, getting rid of poor dentistry work, using massage and heat treatments and doing bowel cleansing

 Making it difficult for the cancer to survive by eating a low sugar/high fibre diet, eating good protein, oxygenating the body, gentle exercise, learning good breathing techniques

 Strengthening the immune system with good nutrition including nutrient shakes and appropriate supplements and having a positive mental attitude

 Nutritional supplements which can help cancer patients include selenium, vitamin C, Omega 3, melatonin, co-enzyme Q10, green tea, lycopene, garlic, indole 3 carbinol

 Acupuncture – “We have seen so many patients with a wide variety of conditions improve unbelievably with acupuncture that it would be inappropriate to deprive anyone of possible benefit from this ancient form of therapy”

The book is rich with detailed information on what supplements and alternative treatments can and cannot do and how they work alongside traditional medicine. Holistic regimes explored include artemisinin, astragalus, Cat’s Claw, Cesium chloride, coffee enemas, cumin seeds, Rife machines, energy balancing, Gerson therapy, hyperthermia treatment, live cell therapy.

The book/CD set costs $30 and can be ordered by phoning the doctors on 09 832 7023

Says Gerry: “We anticipate that within 10 – 15 years cancer will be feared no more than bacterial or viral infections are today.

“In our grandparent’s day, polio, smallpox, tuberculosis and pneumonia were feared diseases, much as cancer is today. We are confident that research and new treatments will soon relegate cancer into a `serious disease of the past’ box.”
