Man with broken leg rescued from D'urville Island
The Wellington based Westpac Rescue Helicopter battled 100 k/ph winds to rescue a man with a broken leg from D'urville Island this afternoon.
The 19 year old man, currently residing on D'urville Island, was injured when his 4WD bike flipped and landed on top of him.
The accident occurred late this morning. The man was working on a farm on the Island.
"Apparently he managed to walk and crawl about 1km to get some help" says Westpac Rescue Helicopter crewman Dave Greenberg. "He was then transported by boat to Kapowai Bay, near French Pass, where we were able to fly to him".
The helicopter battled strong winds and rain to reach the man.
Once the helicopter arrived our Wellington Free Ambulance paramedic stabilised his leg and then he was transported to the Wellington Hospital Emergency Department.
"With over 50 knots of wind behind us it was certainly a much quicker trip back to Wellington" says Greenberg.
The man is currently being treated and assessed in Wellington Hospital. He is in a stable condition.
