The Frostiest Dawns Of The Year

Issued at 12:00pm 07-Jul-2008

The Frostiest Dawns Of The Year

From Tuesday to Thursday a slow moving anticyclone is likely to being light winds and clear nights to much of New Zealand and may well produce the harshest frosts of winter.

"The scene is being set for several nights in a row with severe frosts and roads with black ice", commented MetService Weather Ambassador, Bob McDavitt. "It'll be great for skiing but hazardous for driving. This incoming anticyclone is arriving at the same time of the year that New Zealand records its lowest temperatures. Some inland valleys are still shaded from the low winter sun and air that has been chilled by recent snow falls will be trapped until the northerly winds return on Thursday."

Mr. McDavitt pointed out that overnight low forecasts issued by MetService are for air temperatures, not ground temperatures. "Frosty ground is usually 3 or 4 degrees cooler than the overnight low, so our forecasts for -2C to -3C for a place like Queenstown until Thursday indicate 6 and 7 degrees of frost."

Last weekend's winter storm brought many places their coldest day-time temperatures so far this year and will be hard to beat. On Saturday, the warmest places in the North Island were Kaitaia and Helensville with 12C. Haast, with 10C, was the only spot in South Island to get into double digits.
