“Ride of Your Life for Wellington Free
Ambulance”
Wellington Free Ambulance announced today the upcoming launch of a new major fundraising campaign - “The Ride of Your Life”.
Shaan Stevens, the new Chairman of Wellington Free Ambulance said, “Being picked up in one of our ‘free to the patient’ ambulances could literally mean ‘the ride of your life’.
The public launch scheduled for this Friday will see Wellington’s Kerry Prendergast rolling in an army armoured vehicle, Kapiti Coast Mayor Jenny Rowan will be in hog-heaven on a Harley Davidson and Deputy Upper Hutt Mayor Peter McCardle will arrive in a Jaguar XF supercar. [corrected 31/07/08]
They will be among Mayors from around the region that will descend on the Wellington waterfront on August 1st to promote Wellington Free Ambulance’s fundraising campaign.
Other attendees include Hutt City’s David Ogden, who will arrive on board a police launch and Porirua City Mayor Jenny Brash, who is riding in the front seat of an emergency ambulance.
“We are determined to maintain a free ambulance service for the people of the Wellington region, but we need to raise the resources to achieve that,” Mr Stevens said.
"The Ride of Your Life is a fun concept that all Wellingtonians can buy into and benefit from."
“The Ride of Your Life fundraiser offers three opportunities for locals to show their support for Wellington Free Ambulance and enjoy some exciting rides.”
The fundraising will get underway from mid-October with a month-long Trade Me auction of a variety of donated goods and services, all provided by local businesses.
This will be followed by The Ride of Your Life Spectacle, a three hour show of choreographed thrill rides on the harbour and in the air. It will be the curtain-raiser to the Pelorus Sky Show on Guy Fawkes' night and the public will be invited to make a gold coin donation. All Go Wellington cash bus fares on the night will be donated to Wellington Free Ambulance. Tranz Metro will be supporting the event with a donation.
The third event, a gala dinner and auction at the Duxton, will follow. It will also feature an auction of thrill rides, with a jaunt aboard a Tiger Moth among the items going under the hammer.
"The money raised will go directly into purchasing a new emergency ambulance," said Mr Stevens.
"It's money that could make all the difference if you actually do have to take the ride for your life."
Wellington Free Ambulance responds to a call for help every ten minutes, and is the only ambulance service in New Zealand to provide free-to-patient emergency medical care.
