Media Statement 9 December 2008

New Minister Of Health Welcomed

The 21 District Health Boards welcomed the new Minister of Health to their Board of Governance meeting in Wellington yesterday.

“We’re looking forward to working with the Minister” says Chair of the District Health Boards’ Board of Governance Peter Glensor, “and we’re unanimous in our desire to establish a positive and constructive relationship with the Minister and his office to achieve the changes the Government wants to make.”

Peter Glensor says DHBs welcome the chance to implement the Government’s policies for improving health outcomes for New Zealanders.

“The Minister stressed the importance of DHBs working together, and ensuring the maximum participation of clinicians in our work.  He also noted that the deteriorating economic situation will put even more pressure on DHBs to work efficiently.

“We support the Minister’s intention to reinforce a multi-disciplinary approach to leadership across the sector and we are committed to bringing all available talent to bear on tackling problems and driving the necessary improvements.

“The DHBs have already been seeking open and transparent relationships focused on collaboratively solving key issues and improving sector performance.”

Mr Glensor says DHBs have a key role to play and have a strong track record of working collaboratively to improve and maintain the health of their populations.  That collaboration also extends to their communities to reduce inequalities and disparities in access and health outcomes.

“We treat these responsibilities very seriously and we all have a strong desire to work together to resolve the common issues facing the sector.”
