Today’s Big Latch On broke at least two records – increasing the national record by at least 177 – to take it to 1299 and smashing the single venue record.

‘This is the biggest number of women who have ever got together in one place to breastfeed in New Zealand’ says organiser Jo Fitzpatrick. ‘ Previous records were 76 at Lynmall in 2005 and 83 at the Zoo in 2006.’ Other big venues this year were :
Southern Cross Bar, Wellington 64
St Stephen’s Hall, Christchurch 50
Chipmunks, Timaru 40
Victory Community Centre, Nelson 35
Masterton YMCA 32
Wall Street Mall, Dunedin 31
St John’s, Motueka 30

Venues with 20 to 30 mothers latched on were: Combined Clubs , Marlborough (26); Wanganui (28); Te Awamutu (26); Levin (24); Plunket House, Rotorua (21); Hamilton Plunket (25); Parenting Place, Greenlane (26); Gisborne (24); Marlborough (26) and Whangarei (20)
‘We are really delighted with some of the smaller numbers as well.’ Says Jo ‘ These are made up of women travelling who stop at a café so they get their witnesses and one mother whose baby was only three days old’
