PSA concerned at health director-general stepping down
The Public Service Association is concerned the Ministry of Health is losing an experienced Director-General at a time the health sector is going through major upheavals.
Stephen McKernan announced today that he is stepping down as the Director-General of Health when his current term expires at the end of July.
“Stephen McKernan was an effective leader of the large and complex health sector and his experienced will be missed,” says PSA national secretary Richard Wagstaff.
“He established good working relationships with the PSA and other unions with members working in the health sector.”
“This helped achieve more cohesion in dealing with workforce issues in the health sector.”
“This has enabled the health sector to be more innovative in the way it approaches workforce issues.’’
“The country relies on the effective delivery of health services and we hope that the focus will remain on working to provide effective health services to all New Zealanders,” says Wagstaff.
