Pink Ribbon Bus Backs Breast Awareness

Pink Ribbon Bus Backs Breast Awareness

Metrolink, central Auckland’s bus service, has designed a bright pink bus which will take to the streets this October in support of The New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation’s (NZBCF) Breast Cancer Action Month.

The pink bus is adorned with The Foundation’s trademark pink ribbon and promotes the key breast health message of early detection and screening mammograms.

The bus is assigned to Dominion Road and Mt Eden Road services, two of Auckland busiest transport corridors with over 500 services every weekday.

Breast cancer is the number one cancer killer of New Zealand women with more than 2600 cases diagnosed every year. While the five year survival rate is now close to 85%, New Zealand families still lose more than 650 women to the disease annually. Because of these sobering statistics The Foundation is urging New Zealanders to be breast aware and take action this October.

“We wanted the bus to be recognised as the Pink Ribbon Bus in the same way that the pink ribbon is the international symbol of breast cancer.  To achieve this, we kept the design simple and impactful.  You won’t miss the Pink Ribbon Bus on the streets of Auckland,” says Jon Calder, General Manager Metrolink.

Executive Trustee Heather Shotter says that the using a moving medium such as the Metrolink bus provides The Foundation with the perfect opportunity to get key health messages out to the wider community in an effective way.

“The partnership with Metrolink is an innovative way to drive our messaging to the public and we are truly grateful for their support with our campaign. The bright design of the Pink Ribbon Bus will be an eye-catching way to make people aware of breast health and the importance of having a mammogram,” she said.

“Breast cancer affects one in nine people in New Zealand,” continues Mr Calder.  “We employ over 500 staff and carry over 55,000 customers a day.  We can play our part, literally by driving awareness across the community and raising awareness of need to be breast aware.  What better way to do that than with a bright pink bus.  The team at Metrolink are proud to be able to support the great work the NZBCF does.”
