Bra-vo for Blacksheepdesign ‘Breastfast’

Blacksheepdesign held a successful fundraising ‘Breastfast’ for the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation yesterday. The event marked the end of NZBCF Pink Ribbon Breakfast campaign month.

Around fifty local businesswomen attended the breakfast event, raising $1200 for the NZBCF. Guests were treated to an acoustic performance by Laura Evans, breakfast and two guest speakers.

Blacksheepdesign owner, Stacey Cottrill, was thrilled with the generous donations and informative speakers. “It’s so important for women to talk about breast cancer and know about the support that’s out there,” she said. “I think everyone learnt something today”.

Cheryl MacDonald, breast care nurse at Mid Central Health, shared breast cancer statistics including the improving survival rate. She also dispelled several myths about its causes, saying the biggest risk factor was simply being a woman.

Breast cancer survivor Patti Stone then recounted her experiences, from diagnosis to treatment and recovery. She praised the support she received through the public health system and her family. “Cancer’s not a sentence, it’s a word and you just have to get through it,” she told the audience.

Blacksheepdesign’s Ryley McGougan who organised the Breastfast, says the speakers were well received with their positive twists on a sometimes somber topic. “Everyone came away feeling uplifted and inspired”.
