Newtown Union Health Service cut midwifery service

NUHS Media Release

Newtown Union Health Service cut midwifery service

The Newtown Union Health Service Board has made the difficult decision to end their Midwifery Service. NUHS has provided an integrated model of midwifery care and employed midwives since 1991 to a group of high needs women many of whom English is a second language.

The service is currently funded from the LMC model claiming under the Ministry of Health Section 88. Although this funding has received an increase of 2.5% from 1 October this does not cover the cost of providing midwifery care for high needs women within the community. In the past the service has been able to buffer these costs from additional funding however this option is no longer available as a result of the funding costs.
