New Zealand National Burn Centre goes digital
New digital televisions help patients at National Burn Centre (NBC) fight boredom, and help distract those in chronic pain.
The new sets have found a home in the state-of-the-art facility, located at Middlemore Hospital, just in time for the digital switchover. The Freeview flat screens have been donated by First National Real Estate’s charitable foundation and replace the old analog sets that date back to when the unit opened, in June 2006.
“We are very grateful and thankful for this kind donation from First National Real Estate’s charitable foundation which without doubt will be beneficial for our patients,” says Vina Singh, Charge Nurse Manager at National Burn Centre.
“Our patients tend to stay for longer periods while receiving treatment and these television sets will be a fantastic source of entertainment for them. Patients will be able to keep up-to-date with current affairs, as well as watch sports and entertainment channels.
“These TVs will also be useful as a distraction therapy during long procedures, like dressing changes. Please accept our warmest appreciation for this donation.”
First National’s General Manager Colleen Milne said donating TVs was a tangible and practical way to give back to those in need.
“First National Real Estate’s foundation has been privileged to be able to provide the patients within the National Burn Centre with these televisions,” says Ms Milne.
“It was evident to many of our members, especially those who have visited this internationally acclaimed facility that patients were isolated from family and friends, sometimes for months. These televisions will entertain and help with the long and often painful days these patients often endure during their recovery.”
First National announced its national level sponsorship of NBC last September. To date, the real estate network has donated four ipads with Internet connectivity to the Centre. Also, $5 is donated to NBC from every Home Safe Kit First National offices gift to new home buyers.
NBC is a state-of-the-art facility and part of a larger burn care network with regional burn treatment facilities in Christchurch, Hutt Valley and Waikato. However, the most critical burns patients, of all ages from around New Zealand, are transferred to the New Zealand National Burn Centre for their acute medical and surgical needs.
