Pioneering researcher brings sensitivity to New Zealand

The world’s foremost authority on the trait of high sensitivity, Elaine N. Aron, Ph.D, will present a public lecture on Saturday 2nd November 2013 and a half-day course on Monday 4th November 2013 in Wellington.

High sensitivity (‘sensory-processing sensitivity’) is a normal trait found in 15 to 20% of the population. It is innate and visible from birth. It reflects a certain type of survival strategy, being observant before acting, and as Dr Aron has discovered, it’s different from shyness and introversion even though it may seem like these at first glance (30% with the trait are actually extraverts).

Highly sensitive people (HSPs) are more aware than others of subtleties, are deeply reflective, intuitive, highly empathetic, and often gifted. They have keen imaginations and vivid dreams. However, they are also easily overwhelmed by noise, confusion, crowded places, or any overly stimulating situation and do best when they have time alone each day. Hence they are often labelled as too sensitive, and they perform poorly when being observed even though they are usually quite competent when less nervous.

Highly sensitive children (HSCs) are frequently labelled as shy, introverted and fussy. They are sensitive to everything from scratchy clothes and strong tastes to loud noises and changes in routine. They are highly imaginative and curious, but prone to hurt feelings, upset by criticism, and cautious in new situations.

A clinical psychologist and psychotherapist from the US, Dr Aron has pioneered the research into HSPs since 1991. She is the author of the world wide bestsellers The Highly Sensitive Person and The Highly Sensitive Child.

Her lecture on Saturday 2nd November is being organised by a small team of volunteers from New Zealand and Australia, each who have benefited personally from Dr Aron’s research and writing.

“By raising awareness of this innate trait we hope that more people will understand and respect the needs of highly sensitive people, while celebrating their many strengths and qualities - especially those of highly sensitive children so they can grow into happy, healthy and well-adjusted adults”.

Dr Aron’s lecture on Saturday 2nd November is aimed at HSPs, parents of HSCs, teachers, educators, coaches, and health professionals. It will be followed by a Q & A/panel discussion for attendees to ask specific questions of Dr Aron, or a parent, a teacher, and a registered psychotherapist from New Zealand, each of whom have experience of highly sensitive adults or children.

For HSPs, people managers, supervisors and HR specialists interested in sensitivity in the workplace, Dr Aron will co-present a half-day course with Janine Ramsey on Monday 4th November at Victoria University of Wellington.

Discounted tickets are available for early bookings.
