Osteoporosis NZ and Anchor launch Better Bones Flat White Day

Media Release, 17 October 2013: Baristas across the country will today be brewing Better Bones Flat Whites made with Anchor Calci+ milk to spread the word about Osteoporosis NZ’s Better Bones Week, and the need to top up calcium and vitamin D to help build strong bones.

Osteoporosis, a disease in which the density and quality of bone is reduced, is a major health issue that affects more than half of Kiwi women and nearly a third of men over the age of 60.

Anchor Franchisees have partnered with 26 cafes from Auckland to Queenstown and everywhere in between, to upgrade regular flat whites to a Better Bones Week special, prepared with Anchor Calci+ milk. And for every Better Bones Flat White served, 50 cents will be donated to Osteoporosis NZ.

Anchor Nutritionist Mindy Wigzell says: “The idea is to encourage coffee-lovers – and milk drinkers - to consider calcium-enriched milk like Anchor Calci+, because one glass alone offers 50% of your recommended dietary intake of calcium, and every glass will help top up your vitamin D too*.”

Osteoporosis New Zealand spokesperson Dr Elizabeth Spellacy says we begin to lose bone density faster than it’s formed as early in age as 25 years, but there are three simple steps to building and maintaining bone tissue.

“First and foremost, we need to top up our bones with calcium every day. We need at least 800mg of calcium a day to help build our bones, and dairy products like milk, cheese and yoghurt are well known to be the richest sources of dietary calcium. We also need to make time for regular weight-bearing exercise to decrease the risk of falls and bone fracture.

“Plus - vitamin D helps our bones absorb calcium and while some people are able to obtain most of their vitamin D through sun exposure, getting vitamin D through foods such as fortified milk is really important.”

In addition to the benefits of being high in calcium and containing vitamin D in Anchor Calci+ milk, 7 out of 10 baristas and consumers alike prefer the taste of coffee made with milk from Anchor’s LIGHTPROOFTM bottle - and barristers tell us it froths better too. That is because milk that is damaged by light forms free fatty acids that interfere with frothing.

Mindy adds: “Making a step as simple as switching to Anchor Calci+ milk in your daily coffee, smoothie or cereal can help add mileage to your bone health. We hope that Kiwis will enjoy our Better Bones Flat White Day, and consider calcium-enriched milk as part of their weekly shop.”

*One 200mL glass of Anchor Calci+ gives you 400mg or 50% of your daily calcium needs, and 10% of your daily vitamin D needs.
