Health Sector Managers benefiting from Online Diploma paper

Media Release 15 November 2013

Health Sector Managers benefiting from Online Diploma paper

The new Health sector Diploma level paper for those who are already managing or administrating health and medical practices; PHOs and hospitals is proving to be greatly beneficial to those who have undertaken it.

NorthTec are the only providers of this online qualification.

This specialist paper -- New Zealand Institute of Management (NZIM) Diploma in Practice Management (Health) Level 5 -- covers three major areas: The health system and health economics; legislation, regulations and compliance; cultural awareness and safety with an understanding of current health and welfare related issues.

“The qualification is for people working within the Health sector. It is ideal for experienced and competent managers who are already managing or administrating health sector practices,” NorthTec’s Programme Leader, Business, Rob Meadows says.

He adds, the feedback from those who have completed the paper has been “very positive and the paper had been well received”.

“There are seven courses in this qualification that are wide ranging from management techniques to health related legislation,” says Mark Gummer, Practice Manager. “I have found the course to be very relevant to my position and role. I also believe it is ideally positioned for those considering a career or, are already working in the industry."

Another student Henriette Bjerring says she found the resources and links to be most helpful. “As I am better at visual learning I found the video links interesting and relevant to the course material,” she says.

Helen Pauley who also works in a provincial medical practice as an administrator says the paper has been the ideal tool to prepare her for her future ambitions.

“My career path is to become a Practice Manager and this is what led me to the NorthTec course,” Helen says. “The course content is very relevant to the everyday business of a medical centre. It gives you the opportunity to reflect on your knowledge, review health legislation and its framework and to look at how and what you do while exploring other ways of completing your job”.

The full NZIM Diploma in Practice Management (Health) is being offered as one-year full-time or equivalent part-time course and participants are expected to have access to a health practice or any other similar suitable environment as a condition of entry.

While normal diploma papers are available face-to-face at the Whangarei campus, the course is also fully available nationwide as an online distance learning course.

“NZIM and Practice Managers & Administrators Association of New Zealand (PMAANZ) developed the qualification which is accredited to NorthTec because we have a strong background in business management training and a strong knowledge of the health sector from our Bachelor of nursing degree,” Mr Meadows says.

“We are strongly supported by PMAANZ in our delivery of the qualification, which is relevant to all levels of the health sector.”
The paper will again be available online through NorthTec starting in the first semester in February 2014.

Health sector managers and administrators keen to upskill and enhance their qualifications can follow the normal enrolment process and contact NorthTec’s Freephone 0800162 100 or enquire through:
