Jan Adams appointed Bupa Director Nursing, Quality and Risk
Jan Adams, until recently the chief operating officer and now primary strategic liaison for Waikato DHB, has resigned and will next year take up the role as Bupa New Zealand’s Director Nursing, Quality and Risk.
In his report to the board meeting this week, chief executive Dr Nigel Murray says the board is well aware of Jan’s many achievements as chief operating officer for eight years and prior to that as director of nursing and midwifery.
“There will be an opportunity to farewell her more formally closer to the time, so at this point I just wish to acknowledge her huge service to the Waikato DHB over a lengthy period.”
In announcing it to her staff, Bupa managing director Grainne Moss said: “maintaining high quality service and demonstrating clinical leadership whilst we grow is critical for BUPA.
“We are thrilled to have such a highly experienced and widely respected nursing leader join BUPA to help us do this.”
Mrs Adams has extensive experience within both the UK and New Zealand health sector. Following her nurse and midwife training, she worked for Bupa in Merseyside.
She came to New Zealand in 1992 working first with Wanganui DHB and since 1996 has been at Waikato DHB. Whilst at Waikato, Mrs Adams has held a number of roles including director of nursing and midwifery and eight years as chief operating officer.
Whilst at Waikato, Mrs Adams oversaw the extensive $500 million service and campus redevelopment at Waikato, Thames and Tokoroa hospitals, improved the focus on patient safety, developed the quality strategy and introduced the first New Zealand district health board annual quality report.
As well as effectively leading service provision in the Waikato, Mrs Adams has influenced policy and practice nationally. She led the national hospital quality and performance group and is a member of the Health Quality & Safety Commission falls advisory and national campaign advisory groups.
Mrs Adams served on the New Zealand Nursing Council for four years including two as deputy chair. She was appointed by the Health Minister to the Nurse Practitioner and Employment Working Party and by the Director General to a significant inquiry into services at National Women’s Hospital.
Mrs Adams will start on 2 March next year.
