Use painkillers with care

Use painkillers with care

Arthritis New Zealand Chief Executive Sandra Kirby today urged people who use paracetamol not to be alarmed by recent reports of potential health risks. She was referring to media reports of potential risk of death, or kidney, intestinal and heart problems.

“This study adds to the research on long term use of many common pain relief medications. And it is a timely reminder that all medications have potential side effects.”

“Pain relief is vital for people with arthritis and other chronic conditions. Managing pain relief, disease control and maintaining daily life is a delicate balancing act for doctors and patients.”

“Weighing up the risks of long term use of paracetamol against the benefits of being able to engage in daily activities is an important matter that should be discussed between doctors and patients. We encourage people who are taking paracetamol, or other pain relief, long term to talk with their doctor or rheumatologist about their dose and usage. And we stress the importance of following the prescriber’s advice, and not taking more than has been prescribed”, Ms Kirby concluded.

For people who would like advice and information about other forms of pain relief that might help reduce their need for paracetamol and other medications call Arthritis New Zealand toll free on 0800 663 463 and ask to speak with an Arthritis Educator.

Arthritis New Zealand is the national organisation focussed on raising awareness of the more than 140 different forms of arthritis, advocating for those with the condition, and providing advice and support.
