Market for Anticoagulants Evolving Quickly as Generics and New-Generation Drugs Squeeze Incumbents

Despite Competitive Threats, Growth Prospects Continue to Lure Players According to Greystone Research Associates

(Amherst, NH) – The market for anticoagulants is currently more competitive than at any other time in its history. Conditions that require anticoagulation therapy are overwhelmingly afflictions of the aging, with the leading prescribing diagnosis being nonvalvular atrial fibrillation (AF). These treatments have had significant commercial success despite suffering from a method for clinically necessary reversibility. Work with proteins that could further expand the market by the end of the decade has the potential to place additional pressure on established drugs.

The global market for anticoagulants is significant. Approximately 350,000 hospitalizations, 5.0 million office visits, 276,000 ED visits, and 234,000 OPD are attributable to AF annually within the U.S. alone. Total annual costs for treatment of AF were estimated at $6.65 billion, including $2.93 billion (44%) for hospitalizations with a principal discharge diagnosis of AF, $1.95 billion (29%) for the incremental inpatient cost of AF as a comorbid diagnosis, $1.53 billion (23%) for outpatient treatment of AF, and $235 million (4%) for prescription drugs.
