Cannabinoid Prescription a Historic Step

Cannabinoid Prescription a Historic Step

The prescription of a medical cannabinoid to Alex Renton is a historic step in the right direction the Cannabis Party says.

Health spokesman Alistair Gregory welcomed Peter Dunne's decision to allow the CBD medicine Elixinol to be imported into New Zealand.

"I am so happy about the minister's decision. I hope the treatment proves successful," he said.

"This could pave the way for more doctors to prescribe medical cannabinoids."

Mr Gregory said that while the minister made the right decision in this case, there were hundreds of other patients who also wanted to try cannabinoids.

"There is an opportunity to reform the current system. In the future, decisions about cannabinoids could be made by health professionals without the need for ministerial discretion," he said.

"Morphine and Codeine are both prescribed regularly despite being derived from Opium. Why should different logic be applied to Cannabis derivatives?"

The Cannabis Party would like to see a parliamentary debate on the issue.
