Revealed: The Sex Lives of NZ GrownUps

Revealed: The Sex Lives of NZ GrownUps

We unveil the results from our GrownUps.co.nz sex survey.

Sorry, Christian Grey – GrownUps just weren’t that into you, with only 24.4% of the 762 respondents admitting to having read 50 Shades of Grey in our recent GrownUps sex survey.

But that’s not to say that the over-50 crowd aren’t into a bit of horizontal tango. Quite the opposite, actually, with 82.5% of the 709 question respondents to this question saying they consider themselves sexual.

In fact, almost 40% of the 794 respondents to the questions enjoy a little boot-bumping at least once a week, if not more. Sixteen per cent of respondents (134) do it every few days while 2.4% (19 respondents) enjoy a daily romp.

To find out more about the sex lives of NZ GrownUps, read on… but beware: answers are most definitely appropriate for a mature audience only.

First up, the background stats. The survey ran on the www.grownups.co.nz site for two weeks. We had great engagement, with 1005 respondents: 55.6% male and 44.4% female. The ages of respondents ranged from below 39 to over 80 but the majority were aged between 55 and 74. 93.8% identified as being heterosexual, 16% homosexual and 35% bisexual.

SURVEY HIGHLIGHTS:

+ Of the 841 who answered the question, 64% lost their virginity before they were 20. Seven per cent did the dirty for the first time when they were just 14. A little over 1% (10 respondents) said they’re still a virgin.

+ How many brides could legitimately wear white on their wedding day? Just 14.2% of respondents waited until their wedding night. A whopping 85.8% lost their virginity before marriage.

+ Think it’s a shut-shop once you’re over 50? Think again. 82.5% of respondents would consider themselves sexual. 35.9% of the 794 respondents to the questions enjoy a little boot-bumping at least once a week, if not more. 16% of respondents (134) do it every few days while 2.4% (19 respondents) enjoy a daily romp. Of the 725 respondents, 69.7% said they don’t have sex as often as they’d like.

+ On that note, 75.1% of 615 respondents put their, er, hand up to say they masturbate.

+ At what age were GrownUps having the best sex of their life? The dirty thirties takes first place, followed by the naughty forties and then tantalising twenties.

The reasons why sex was so good then? At that stage of life they:
- had no hang ups with body
- were experienced and confident enough to ask for what they wanted
- free of the demands of small children
- had more time
- had more energy
- had less stress
- no contraception concerns due to hysterectomies, the snip, or menopause.

+ Who said toys are just for kids? 30.3% (234 of 773 respondents) spice up their sex life, using sex toys (25%), performance-enhancing pills (16.1%) or other means (17.4%) to heat up the moment, including porn, music, marijuana, DVDs, lubricants and massage oils, sexy underwear, imagination, mirrors, dirty talk, food, rope and wine.

+ The number one sex toy of choice? A vibrator. The “rabbit” came up numerous times.

+ What time is it? 248 respondents shared their favourite time to have sex: 31.5% of them like a bit of early morning delight, while 24.6% rate evening relations and 20.2% prefer their rendezvous at night-time.

+ Favourite places to roll in the hay? The bedroom, in bed – an overwhelming favourite – followed by outside, anywhere, the motorhome, sandhills, anywhere private and the lounge.

+ The majority of the 213 question respondents said any position they got to have sex in was a good one, but the standout favourite position is doggy-style (25.80%), followed by missionary (19.24%), followed by woman on top (11.73%). The sideways scissor position was a dark horse contender, slipping in at fourth place (4.24%).

+ Sorry, Christian Grey – GrownUps just weren’t that into you, with only 24.4% of the 762 respondents admitting to having read 50 Shades of Grey.

+ Sex aside, what do GrownUps reckon constitutes a good lover? Someone who is compassionate, considerate, caring, tender and patient. Someone who you are physically and emotionally attracted to and who has a desire to please. Someone who gives as much as they take. Hygiene also rated highly.

+ Bad health cramps the style of 39.05% of the 612 question respondents, the main causes being bad backs, bad knees, bad hips, erectile dysfunction, dryness, sore joints, prostate issues and the flexibility needed to get into and hold positions. Medication also affects the sex life of many, especially heart medication.

+ The gift of the gob? Looks like there are a lot of cunning linguists out there in Over-50 Land: 67.6% of respondents enjoy giving and 74.1% enjoy receiving.

+ Hold the phone – phone sex is hot right now, with 52.9% (118) of the 223 respondents to this question saying it’s something they’ve done. Ring ring!

+ Other websites, apps or clubs GrownUps have used as part of their sexual life? Find Someone rated very highly, followed by Skype, chat rooms and phone sexting. Seven respondents had tried Tinder (swipe left, swipe right) and 1 had tried Snapchat. 18 respondents have made like Tarzan and been to a swingers club.

+ Off the 644 who answered, 89.8% said they believe that intimacy and sex can be kept alive with the same partner over many years. Awwww.

Many of our survey answers were NSFW (not safe for work), so instead we’ve compiled them all into a “Sealed Section” report, available to download from www.grownups.co.nz. It’s not for the faint-hearted!

We can also offer interviews with www.GrownUps.co.nz editor Jane Matthews, who can provide further background and information, as well as other insights into the NZ GrownUps community and what they think on any number of topics.
