Counties Manukau Health and Tumu Whakarae present Indigenous Health Symposium 2015

Accelerating indigenous health gains is top of the agenda for a symposium bringing together indigenous health champions from around the world.

Timed for the days immediately before APAC 2015*, the Indigenous Health Symposium provides an opportunity for health leaders worldwide to share experiences with experts from New Zealand, Canada and the United States.

Counties Manukau Health and the national District Health Board strategic reference group Tumu Whakarae, in conjunction with key sponsors Ko Awatea and Kia Ora Hauora, are offering 175 places at the symposium to ensure high-quality engagement prior to APAC.

Conference chair and CM Health’s Director of Maaori Health, Riki Nia Nia, says the conference will help leaders with accountability or commitment to accelerating indigenous health gains to be more effective in their endeavours.

“We have an excellent programme of local and international experts to help board members and senior health executives drive greater effectiveness in their efforts to address health inequality amongst indigenous populations.

“The symposium will provide indigenous health leaders a chance to test and share their thinking and give them at least five specific things to implement as soon as they get home.”

The symposium offers a unique opportunity to experience first-hand the cultural practices and strengths of the local Maaori and Pacific populations and includes as its key topics:
• Leadership in indigenous health
• Indigenous workforce development
• Applying data and evidence to support indigenous health policy, advocacy and health outcomes (tools and enablers)
• Intersectoral collaboration toward accelerating indigenous health gains

Speakers include Leslie Bonshor, Director of Aboriginal Health at Fraser Health Authority in Canada, Andy Teuber President of Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium and Dr Dale Bramley/CEO of Waitemata DHB in NZ.

The symposium will conclude with a round-table discussion on indigenous health collaboration across the Pacific, to set the direction for future collaboration and knowledge exchanges.
