High patient numbers at Auckland City Hospital


Auckland City Hospital is currently experiencing high numbers of patients in the Emergency Department. This has been due to a number of factors including respiratory-related illnesses.

We want to assure all patients who need immediate hospital-based attention that they will still receive the treatment they need, says Chief Medical Officer, Dr Margaret Wilsher. “However, people who arrive at our Emergency Department with non-urgent injuries may experience a longer wait.”

The hospital plans for higher numbers during the winter months. This includes being able to increase bed capacity at fairly short notice. Director of Provider Services at Auckland DHB, Jo Gibbs said, “We have opened additional beds and are managing our patients safely.

There are other options for less serious illnesses and we have also updated our website with information on options for health care. This includes going to their GP, calling Healthline or visiting one of the local Accident and Emergency clinics. For some people these are free.”

The Emergency Department is for emergencies. If you are sick you need to know the right place to go:

For non-urgent, less serious health concerns when your doctor is closed. Contact one of the out of hours Accident and Emergency centres visit www.healthpoint.co.nz to find the closest one to you.

For serious injury or serious health concerns go to the hospital Emergency Department or ring 111.

If your child is unwell, it's always best to seek medical attention sooner, rather than later. Don't wait to see if their condition gets worse
