Innovative Staff Battle it out at Southern DHB

Southern DHB is again working with staff to come up with innovative ideas to improve health service delivery.

This year, ten applications will be judged in the Southern Innovation Challenge, a competition designed to give DHB staff the opportunity to present their innovative ideas to a judging panel which then awards funding.

Ideas as diverse as using technology to provide information to patients about endoscopic procedures, breaking the mould by redesigning fracture clinic, initiating Safe Sleep messages in Preschools via Doll Play and the transferring of isolation patients, are among the many suggestions from Southern DHB staff for quality and efficiency improvements.

The winners will share a total prize pool of $20,000.

Southern Innovation Challenge is proudly supported by Westpac New Zealand Limited and Otago Polytechnic. Applicants need to show that their idea identifies with Southern District Health Board’s Southern Strategic Health Plan.

“Every year we have such a fantastic range of entries from a mixture of clinical and administrative staff and it’s so difficult to choose the winners. I’m really looking forward to hearing about the innovative ideas staff have to improve our services to the community,” said Lexie O’Shea, Acting Chief Executive Officer, Southern DHB.

Cherie McConville (Director of Performance, Southern DHB) will be joined on the judging panel by Leanne Samuel (Executive Director Nursing and Midwifery, Southern DHB), Peter Harris (Innovation Facilitator, Otago Polytechnic) and John Blaikie (Private Advisor, Westpac New Zealand Limited).

The Southern Innovation Challenge will take place on Wednesday 7 October 2015.
