Southern DHB Staff Show Support For White Ribbon Day

Southern DHB Staff Show Support For White Ribbon Day

This Wednesday (25 November) is White Ribbon Day and the Southern District Health Board’s Violence Intervention Programme team is already on the job with a series of initiatives to show support for Violence Free Families.

The centrepieces for this year’s promotions in Dunedin and Invercargill include large wooden white ribbons built by SDHB’s carpenters.

Standing about 1.5 metres tall the ribbons have plenty of space for people to put their signatures as a way of showing their support for Violence Free Families and this year’s White Ribbon Day theme of ‘respectful relationships’.

“We think this is a simple but powerful way for people to show their support for the violence free family message,” says SDHB Family Violence Intervention Co-ordinator Carol Dempster.

“We have two ribbons in Dunedin – one in the foyer at Wakari Hospital and the other at in the foyer of Dunedin Public Hospital – and already we have many signatures. Feedback from the people who have seen and signed the ribbons has been really positive.”

“It’s also planned to get the white ribbons around some of the services as well so as many people as possible get an opportunity to sign,” commented Ms Dempster.

Southland Hospital has a large display in the main foyer of Southland Hospital from today until Friday (23-30 November) with local resources, banners and white ribbons for the public and staff to wear.

“Then on Wednesday at 10am we will be unveiling our large white ribbon and gathering the first signatures,” says SDHB Family Violence and Child Protection Coordinator Nicola Hills.
