New Software to Solve Back Pain Associated with Poor Posture

New Kiwi Software to Solve Back Pain Associated with Poor Posture

Poor posture is linked to numerous negative long term health issues including backpain. The associated costs including health-care and absenteeism costs can have serious implications for a business’s bottom line.

Launched today on Kickstarter, innovative new software application, Prometheus, aims to improve overall health through giving users live feedback on their posture and blink rate.

Kiwi co-founders and physiotherapists Nikki Tse and Trevor Montgomery say with the rise of technology, people are increasingly spending more time at their computers and experiencing the detrimental effects of poor posture as a result.

“Around 80% of the population will suffer back pain in their lifetime and this is costly on so many levels,” says Tse. “Poor posture is a huge contributor to neck and back pain and this can lead to poor overall health, absenteeism, poor employee engagement, lost productivity and in some instances costly disability claims. The cost to business – and the health-care sector – is huge.”

The duo have developed Prometheus, a desk-top software application, after seeing a need to help people become more aware of their posture when using computers.

“For years, we as physiotherapists, felt frustrated with being the ambulance at the bottom of the cliff’. Through Prometheus, we’ve developed an innovative way of helpingprevent injuries and pain occurring in the first place. This is not just for our patients but individuals, families and small businesses worldwide who want to improve their overall health. We’re hugely excited about the software and believe that it has the ability to change people’s lives.”

The couple hope to raise $293,000 through crowdfunding platform Kickstarter, with the 30 day campaign launching today. This will be no mean feat as only 2% of crowd funding campaigns with targets over $100,000 are successful. However Nikki and Trevor are no strangers to hard work. “It’s been through many late nights and sheer determination, working around our family and physiotherapy business, that we’ve got Prometheus to a point where we believe it is ready to be commercialised. We believe it has huge potential both in New Zealand and internationally, and we hope that other’s agree and help us to take that next step,” adds Tse.

The aim is to raise enough funds to refine the user experience, build the cloud component that allows multiple users for families and businesses and build detailed reports that will help users keep track of their overall progress. Kickstarter backers will be the first to receive licenses for the software in September 2016 before public release.
