Real Meals Coalition challenges Compass to DHB Cook-off
The Real Meals Coalition is challenging Compass to a local Southland/Otago cook-off.
Commercial provider, Compass has a 15 year contract with Southern DHB to provide ready-made meals, which opponents have criticised as disgusting and inedible.
Invercargill’s Mayor, Tim Shadbolt, who is backing the Real Meals campaign, says; “Cooking seems to be among the most popular reality TV shows these days, and our challenge to Compass is that they engage with us in a local cook-off to see who can make the best meal.
“ It will be Compass versus cooks and food producers from Otago and Southland making their versions of the Compass hospital menus.”
The challenge follows a survey which found food served by the Waikato District Health Board earns a 99-percent satisfaction rating with patients.
Tim Shadbolt says: “At the moment Waikato is clearly in the lead with their gourmet hangi dish, but we’re out to knock them off their perch.”
A coalition of community groups, trade unions, and political parties is calling on the DHB to ditch Compass and restore healthy, locally-made meals for hospitals and Meals on Wheels.
