DHB initiates legal proceedings regarding hospital plumbing leaks

Capital & Coast District Health Board (DHB) has initiated legal proceedings in the High Court in relation to the pinhole leaks discovered in the plumbing at Wellington Regional Hospital.

The parties involved in the legal proceedings include:

• Beca, which provided design and engineering services for the Wellington Regional Hospital redevelopment

• Crane Group, the Australian based manufacturer of the copper pipes

• Fletcher Construction, which was main contractor for the Wellington Regional Hospital redevelopment.

Chief executive Debbie Chin said we cannot have plumbing in our hospital that leaks.

“As this matter is now before the courts, we are limited in the information we can release to the public,” says Mrs Chin.

“It’s not appropriate to speculate what the solution would be to resolve the issue or how much it would cost. However, I can assure you that these are important components of our ongoing work.

“We know the legal process isn’t quick. We will continue to manage the leaks so our staff can continue to provide our community with high quality health services.”
