Awards to celebrate Southern DHB nurses for International Nurses Day

As nurses around the world celebrate International Nurses Day on Thursday(12th of May 2016), Southern DHB will be saying “Thank You” for the huge contribution nurses make every day to health outcomes and communities.

Nurses Excellence Awards are being held in Southland and Dunedin thisThursday night to recognise the significant contribution our nurses make to improve the health and wellbeing of patients and the great effort and work they do each day. This year 37 nurses in Southland and 55 nurses in Dunedin have been nominated.

Held annually on Florence Nightingale’s birthday, the theme for this year’s International Nurse’s Day ‘Nurses - A Force for Change: Improving health systems’ resilience.

Southern DHB Executive Director of Nursing and Midwifery Leanne Samuel commented “with over 2200 nurses working at the DHB, it is an opportunity to recognise our nominees who are nominated by their peers for going the extra mile.

“These events are a true celebration of our nursing achievements, hard work and dedication by our nursing team”.

One of Southern DHB’s longest serving nurses, Carole Duthie, who this year celebrates 45 years of service with the DHB says “I have had a wonderful career doing a job that I love, working with very special dedicated, inspirational and hardworking people, and I am proud to say that I am a nurse.

In her nursing career she has worked in the Maternity Unit, NNU, Children’s Ward, Operating Theatre, Orthopaedic Ward and is currently working in the Surgical Ward.

“I believe that by caring for my patients and their family/whanau, I am just part of a link in a chain. Without the support of everyone else, including the cleaners, orderlies, office staff and other health professionals, such as surgeons, doctors and physiotherapists, I would not be able to complete my nursing practice,” said Carole.

Otago Awards: Awards and celebrations take place on 6pm Thursday, 12 May 2016, First Floor Atrium, Otago Museum.

Southland Awards: Awards and celebrations take place on 6.30pm Thursday, 12 May 2016, Hansen Hall, Southern Institution of Technology, Ascot Park Hotel, from 6pm.

In celebration of International Nurses’ Day 2016, we have been very grateful to have received a number of monetary scholarships to support our nursing. They will support advanced practice and/or professional development and are to be awarded from the category of nursing excellence.

Nursing excellence categories: Clinical Excellence/Nursing Care Delivery; Innovative Practice; Contribution to the Community; Nursing Leadership; Research/Evidence Based Practice; Nursing Education; Rising Star; Preceptorship / Mentor; Child and Maternal Health.
