Have you heard about the new Audiology Unit?

A new Audiology Unit is in the pipeline for Southern DHB. Due to open in November 2016, the facility will be spacious and fit-for-purpose, with audiology testing booths, an area for future video-conferencing, a large waiting area and a children’s play area.

This impressive unit will be redeveloped on the ground floor of the Main Ward block at Wakari Hospital, relocating from the 2nd Floor of Dunedin Hospital. The new location at Wakari will provide easy access to the unit and free parking nearby.

Late last year a project team was formed and has since been working together in conjunction with architects to create this fit-for-purpose functional unit, focusing on the design, layout, colours, and features.

The project team has consulted with consumer groups, as users of the service. This included; the Hearing Association, Deaf Aotearoa and the Otago Association for Deaf Children. These groups have provided feedback and will continue to be involved with the aim of ensuring the new Audiology Unit will best benefit their families/whanau who will be utilising the unit in the future.

“This new unit will give us the tools to develop a quality service that incorporates family-centred care,” says Robyn McNeur, Audiology Project Team member and Audiology Professional Leader.

Audiology Project Leader and Executive Director for Allied Health Lynda McCutcheon agrees “This is an exciting time for Audiology to be going to a new place, with updated facilities that are contemporary so that we can ensure the best experience of care for our patients, families and whanau who access the service.”
