Fewer mothers and babies dying but much work still to do

The New Zealand Nurses Organisation (NZNO) welcomes the findings of the Perinatal and Mortality Review Committee report that show a consistent decline in the number of women and babies dying during pregnancy and childbirth.

NZNO professional nursing adviser, Kate Weston says, “Good work is being done right around the country to reduce perinatal and maternal morbidity and mortality. The way to maintain these gains is to staff maternity units properly and provide safe, quality working environments for families and staff.”

“One thing that is clear from the report is the work that still needs to done to reduce the disparity between Pākehā neonatal deaths & still births and those in Māori and Pacific communities. We believe the answers relate to inequality and the provision of culturally appropriate services.
