New Zealand hosts SNOMED CT conference

Date: 20 October 2016

The Ministry of Health is hosting the international SNOMED CT Expo and Conference on 27-28 October at Te Papa museum, with the theme ‘Trusted, actionable health information’.

The two day expo brings together health IT professionals, health practitioners, government officials, researchers, academics and vendors from around the world to showcase and further spread the use of SNOMED CT, the international language of health care. SNOMED CT is owned and distributed around the world by the International Health Terminology Standards Development Organisation (IHTSDO).

“This is the first time the event is going to be held in New Zealand, and over 300 delegates from IHTSDO’s 28 member countries will be attending the conference. We’re proud to host the conference and share our SNOMED successes and innovative solutions to an international audience,” says Dr Stewart Jessamine, director of Protection, Regulation and Assurance and acting Director of Public Health, Ministry of Health.

Health Minister Dr Jonathan Coleman will be delivering the keynote speech for the event. Other speakers include Chai Chuah, Director-General of Health and Dr John Halamka, renowned health IT leader and Chief Information Officer of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Centre in the United States.

Dr Tom Morton, Nelson-Marlborough District Health Board emergency physician and Dr Tony Smith, St John New Zealand Medical Director, will be sharing their experiences using SNOMED in emergency services.

The expo will feature trade exhibits of local and international vendors, as well as four presentation streams and tutorials over the two day event. It will also have the first-ever SNOMED hackathon, where participants will be challenged to design and build a rich and engaging clinical decision support app or create knowledge base materials for clinical decision support. Delegates will vote for their favourite app, and a winner will be announced on 28 October.
