New service increases smokefree support for Coasters

A new free service set up to help West Coasters stop smoking is now up and running.
Oranga Ha - Tai Poutini employs three staff dedicated to helping people from Karamea to Jackson Bay become smokefree.
Manager Gail McLauchlan says the service will provide more intensive, personalised and effective smokefree support.
“New Zealand has a goal to be smokefree by 2025 and we’ve been set up to help ensure the Coast leads the way. Our mission is simple; a smokefree West Coast by 2025,” says Mrs McLauchlan.
Gail McLauchlan says one of the best things you can give your children for Christmas is a smokefree you.
“Deciding to go smokefree is probably the Christmas gift your family wish for the most. If you want to spend many more Christmas’ with your tamariki and mokopuna please get in touch with us. We’re here to help.”
The smokefree service is free and tailored to what works best for the individual.
“The first thing we do with our clients is meet with them face-to-face and set a quit date. Once we’ve got a quit date we work intensively with them to help them achieve their goal and stay smokefree.
“We know giving up smoking can be hard but there’s clear evidence that having the right support makes you much more likely to be successful,” says Mrs McLauchlan.
An individual stop smoking programme could include ongoing face-to-face meetings, texting, videoing, skyping, emails, or attending group sessions. As well as customised support, clients can also access free Nicotine Replacement Therapy patches, gum and lozenges.
To celebrate the launch of the new service everyone who signs up to start their smokefree journey by the end of January, and who is smokefree for one month, will go into the draw to win one of five $100 New World vouchers.
