$40K in Proceeds Awarded To Charities

MEDIA ADVISORY

$40K in Proceeds Awarded To Charities from Sale of Toi Ohomai Charity House

New beds and linen for some of the most vulnerable in our communities are a direct result of the Toi Ohomai Charity House proceeds that were distributed today in the annual presentation of funds.

Over $40,000 was issued in a ceremony on Mokoia Campus in Rotorua, to a deserving crowd of 21 recipient charities and community organisations.

The Waiariki Women’s Refugee group said that with the $7,000 they received, families that use the safe houses in Rotorua will now have more comfortable stays when times are hard.

We want to be able to give the women and their children who come to the safe homes a real homely experience so that they can feel loved. The beds we have now are old and moldy, it’s not easy to find the resources we need so we are extremely grateful for the donation received today.”

St Vincent De Paul Area President Brenda Whelan said the $800 donation they received would help them to continue feeding more than 100 people each week through their voluntary service.

“3 nights a week we take food out to the communities and we are completely reliant on grants and donations. We are very grateful that we’ve been chosen as a recipient so that we can continue with the work we do to help those who are hungry.”

Sue Gunn, Toi Ohomai Marketing and Communications Manager said that year after year community groups in Rotorua could benefit from the great work our students do alongside our industry partners and sponsors.

“The Charity House project not only delivers practical skills for our carpentry, electrical and interior design students, it allows them to give back to their own community, and help those groups who work tirelessly to improve outcomes for those who are less fortunate or disadvantaged.

“We’re really proud that $41,459.39 has been handed out today to help people within our city.”
