Adherium and Asthma + Respiratory Foundation NZ collaborate

Adherium and Asthma and Respiratory Foundation NZ Collaborate to Improve Outcomes for Asthma Patients, with a Special Focus on New Zealand Children

Asthma and Respiratory Foundation NZ announces today that it has agreed to work with Adherium to improve outcomes for asthma patients, with a special focus on New Zealand children and teenagers, in a collaboration to be known as the Kiwi Kids Programme.

Adherium is an an award-winning digital health company that improves medication adherence and patient outcomes through its connected respiratory platform called Hailie™.

Letitia O’Dwyer, Chief Executive Officer of Asthma and Respiratory Foundation NZ, comments: “We are very excited to be working alongside Adherium. With our joint knowledge, research and insights, we can really help New Zealand children with asthma. Adherium’s technology not only helps with medication adherence and asthma management, but showcases how technology can be integrated into health devices. We are all very excited about the possibilities of this, and how it can be utilised to assist and improve the lives of those one in seven children that take medication for asthma.”

Arik Anderson, Chief Executive Officer of Adherium, adds: “This Kiwi Kids Programme is a really important step towards improving poorly controlled asthma in New Zealand children and adolescents. Our Hailie™ solution is designed to help people with asthma achieve better health by using digital tools to manage their condition. We are excited about our collaboration with the Asthma and Respiratory Foundation NZ.”

Garth Sutherland, Founder of Adherium, also added: “Adherium’s Hailie technology has been proven to reduce child and teenage hospitalisation due to asthma, so we must get Hailie into the hands of our tamariki who need it most. Together with the Asthma and Respiratory Foundation NZ we are focussing on regions of highest need first.”

Adherium is the developer and provider of the Hailie™ solution, which automatically tracks medication use and provides missed-dose reminders that are clinically proven to significantly improve clinical outcomes. Hailie™ enables meaningful discussions between the patient, caregiver and health professional. The Hailie™ sensor clips on to the patient’s standard prescription inhaler and enables them and their caregiver to review medication usage on the Hailie App. At the patient’s discretion, they can choose to share this information with their health professional when reviewing their asthma management.

It is broadly accepted that low adherence to preventative asthma medications is a widespread issue that is associated with poor health outcomes, resulting in unscheduled doctor’s visits, emergency department visits, and hospitalisations.

Latest kiwi children asthma statistics are:

• One in seven New Zealand children take medication for asthma;

• Large numbers of New Zealand children are admitted to hospital with asthma (3,552 in 2015); and

• Over 500,000 school days are lost each year due to asthma.
