Chair of Comprehensive Care PHO, Dr Tim Malloy, resigns

The Chairman of Comprehensive Care PHO, Dr Tim Malloy, today announced his resignation, effective immediately, to enable him to focus on his health and family.

Dr Malloy, whose vast contribution includes his work as a rural general practitioner for more than 30 years – he was granted the special status of Distinguished Fellow of the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners (RNZCGP) earlier this year – said that his need to concentrate on getting well again had by necessity become his main priority.

"I know that, while we always have challenges in our sector, I believe that I am leaving Comprehensive Care in great shape and in good hands," Dr Malloy said.

Dr Malloy, who has just been discharged from hospital after another health set back, is well known for his advocacy of primary and rural health care, his patients and general practitioners throughout New Zealand.

In addition to his work as Chair of Comprehensive Care and President of the RNZCGP, Dr Malloy serves as a member and current Chair of the General Practice Leaders Forum (GPLF), member of the Board of Best Practice Advocacy Centre New Zealand (bpacnz), the Prostate Cancer Taskforce Implementation Group, the Health Workforce New Zealand Governance group and many other leadership roles in Primary Care.

Comprehensive Care CEO John Ross said Dr Malloy has worked tirelessly over the last seven years to position the Primary Health Organisation at the cutting edge of service delivery in primary healthcare.

"Dr Malloy has seen a number of ground-breaking initiatives – including the Waitemata Primary and Community Services Plan, network partnerships (with National Hauora Coalition, Coast to Coast Healthcare and Alliance Health Plus), Rural Point of Care Testing, GASP (Giving Airways Support to Patients) and the Collaborative Mental Health and Addictions Credentialing Programme for Primary Health Care Nurses – come to fruition during his leadership.

"Many of these initiatives have resulted in improved health outcomes for people. He leaves the board and the organisations he has presided over in excellent condition. On behalf of the board and all of us working in primary health, I want to thank Dr Malloy for his outstanding contribution and we wish him and his family all the best for the future.”

Mr Ross said going forward Comprehensive Care has a strong, capable, experienced and diverse group of directors and advisors who will continue to carry on the work of governance.

“The Board will appoint a Chair from within their number in due course. Certainly, speaking on behalf of myself as CEO, the senior management and our team here at Comprehensive Care, we have a great working relationship with our Board and every confidence in their continuing, and very able, input and oversight.”
