Broad reaching Inquiry into Maori Health to begin – Maori Council

“Time to throw open the doors of the whare and let the truth come in!”

“I am pleased that the Maori Affairs Select Committee will has called on the Inquiry into the Health System and its impacts on Maori. This is a major win for our people wherever they are and more than we could have hoped for. Its time to throw open the doors of the whare and let the truth come in.” these were the words of the Executive Director of the New Zealand Maori Council, Matthew Tukaki, as he waiting outside the Maori Affairs Select Committee room to bring on an Inquiry into life saving and life extending medications.

‘A number of Maori have called this Inquiry on and now its time to really uncover why so many of our people are not able to access these lifesaving and extending medications. The truth is that this Crown entity has no or little oversight, they have no connection to Tikanga and it is our view they certainly do not abide by the Treaty. Its more than that now – it’s about the broader health system ” Tukaki said

“To all of our wahine and whanau out there across the nation, all New Zealanders, this is a win for the little people. The people who often don’t get a voice and I am proud to have supported the Mulhollands in getting this inquiry up.” Tukaki said

“The real work begins and Maori and all New Zealanders now have the chance to have their voices heard through the process of this Inquiry. It’s time to push back against Government Departments and Agencies who have done nothing more than stall, to do nothing and more.” Tukaki said.
