Hearing for many Christmasses to come…

Hearing for many Christmasses to come…

Christmas is a time of laughter, jingling bells, excited children and Santa parades. The Christmas songs playing at packed malls and shrieks of glee from children all add to the excitement, so how do we protect our hearing in the midst of all the festivities?

“We love Christmas and the Santa Parades around New Zealand” says Louise Carroll, CEO of The National Foundation for the Deaf, “and the vibrant noisy atmosphere is all part of it. But it’s very important for people, especially those who are participating in bands and on floats playing loud music, to remember to protect their hearing.”

It has been scientifically proven that exposure to loud noise can cause permanent hearing loss. People can start developing noise induced hearing loss as children or young adults through being in noisy environments or listening to loud music.

The solution is simple. “If you know you’re going to be somewhere noisy during the festive season, use some kind of hearing protection,” says Louise. “A pair of inexpensive ear plugs is perfect and mums can keep them in their handbags, just in case. It’s about protecting our hearing and educating our children to do the same.

“It’s also a great reason to avoid giving those noisy toys as presents that are bound to drive most parents up the wall after a couple of hours.”

So while you have a merry, happy Christmas this year, remember to keep your and your children’s hearing protected so you can all enjoy hearing the delightful sounds of Christmas for many years to come.
