West Coast Children benefit from Countdown Kids Appeal

West Coast children will benefit from new equipment as a result of the generosity displayed by New Zealanders through the Countdown Kids Hospital Appeal.

At a ceremony held in Greymouth last Thursday, Ruth Krippner, Chair of the Countdown Kids Hospital Appeal handed Dot O’Connor, Clinical Nurse Manager Paediatrics a cheque for $31,368.

Grey Base Hospital has been fortunate to be a recipient of the Countdown Kids Hospital Appeal funding since 2008. Through purchases that have been made with this funding those caring for our children at West Coast hospitals are benefitting from access to modern state of the art equipment that is as good as it gets.

Liaison paediatrician, Dr John Garrett spoke of how important the contribution of the Countdown Kids appeal was in enabling West Coast children to receive care the equal of anywhere in NZ.

Despite tough economic times, this year’s appeal raised $840,000 to be distributed among 12 hospitals throughout New Zealand to improve children’s health.

The West Coast money is destined for the purchase of such equipment as a Cardiotocography machine to record uterine contractions and the foetal heartbeat during the last stages of pregnancy, vital sign monitors, IV stands and specialist scales.

In addition to the cheque, Ruth Krippner and the Westport and Greymouth Countdown teams also presented some toys for the children’s ward and some knitting for the new babies from the Coast maternity wards.
