Rodney Women Encouraged to Start the Year with a Mammogram
Women in Orewa and Stanmore Bay are being encouraged to start the year with a mammogram.
BreastScreen Waitemata Northland’s digital mobile screening unit will be visiting Orewa and Stanmore Bay over the coming weeks. Women who have never had a mammogram or who have not had one for more than two years are being encouraged to take advantage of the free breastscreening appointments being offered.
Moira McLeod, programme manager for BreastScreen Waitemata Northland, says women aged 45 to 69 are entitled to a free mammogram every two years.
“Having a mammogram can save your life. It can detect a cancerous growth as small as 2 mm, which is about the size of a grain of rice. By comparison when a breast cancer can be felt, it is on average 2 to 3 cm – the size of a walnut.”
The new digital unit will be based at the Orewa Estuary Arts Centre on 214 Hibiscus Coast Highway between January 16 and February 11, and at the Stanmore Bay Community Leisure Centre on Brightside Rd between February 13 and March 3.
Ms McLeod says the digital screening process is much faster.
“All it takes is 15 minutes – and it could save you or your loved one’s life.”
Unscheduled, walk-in appointments are available and women are also welcome to visit the unit to find out more about the breastscreening process.
While at Orewa and Stanmore Bay, the unit will be open Mondays from 8.30am to 6.15pm, Tuesdays to Thursdays from 8.30am to 3.30pm, and on Saturdays from 8.30am to 12.15pm.

Free digital mammograms are also available at BreastScreen Waitemata Northland’s fixed clinic at 2 Pupuke Rd, Takapuna. The clinic is open six days a week, including Saturday mornings and late nights Monday and Thursdays.
