More than 8,000 already registered for New Zealand ShakeOut!

30 March 2012

More than 8,000 already registered for New Zealand ShakeOut!

In less than a day more than 8,000 people have registered to take part in New Zealand ShakeOut.

The campaign was launched yesterday morning and the Director of Civil Defence Emergency Management, John Hamilton, said the initial response has been superb: “It’s a great start, now we need to keep the momentum going.”

New Zealand ShakeOut aims to have 1 million people in New Zealand do a “Drop, Cover and Hold” earthquake drill at 9:26am on 26 September (9:26-26:9).

The campaign started with the launch of its website (get to it from www.getthru.govt.nz) where people, businesses and other organisations can receive a range of information on earthquakes, preparedness and the Drop, Cover and Hold drill, and register.

The campaign will gain momentum over time. A Facebook page and Twitter account will be launched soon and there will be advertising on radio and TV. Many promotional activities are being organised around the country – all leading up to the nationwide earthquake drill.
